Abel Prieto is a monumental idiot.
He belched out a few "opinions" for the Agence France Press, and I just couldn't resist bringing them to you with annotations (plus, AFP has annotations of its own!)
First, this is the link (hat tip Penultimos Dias) for your enjoyment.... and this is my dissection of it:
HAVANA (AFP) — There is no reason to believe that Cuban President Fidel Castro's life is in danger as he convalesces, Culture Minister Abel Prieto said late Friday.
(he doesn't say why he is so sure....)
The statement came amid a wave of rumors, especially among the Cuban-American community in Florida, that Cuba's long-time communist leader, who has not been seen in public since undergoing surgery over a year ago, is either dead or on his deathbed.
(AFP doubts about Abelito's brain farting.....)
"I have no element that leads me to believe that the life of Fidel is in danger," Prieto told reporters during the presentation of a book on Castro's speeches on the environment.
(he still doesn't produce any evidence pointing to the allegedly healthy state of El Comandante)
Prieto said that he did not have direct news about Castro's health, but pointed to a series of newspaper opinion articles signed by the Cuban leader to say that he is is "very active intellectually."
(oh, wait, he has no direct news, but he still says that Castro's life is not in danger and that there's no element that leads to believe that he's not doing well? but... didn't he say right there that he has no direct news about Castro's health? C'mon, this guy is the MINISTER OF CULTURE and he doesn't know shit about El Comandante's health?)
Castro, who turned 81 on August 13 with little fanfare in Cuba, underwent intestinal surgery in July 2006 and handed power over temporarily to his younger brother Raul, 76.
(Well, AFP, he underwent much more surgeries.....)
He has not been seen in public since before the operation, though he has appeared in photographs and eight videos, the last of which aired on June 5.
(The videos were great, we enjoyed them a lot, and we are disappointed we haven't been treated to watch another one!)
Forty-one opinion articles attributed to Castro have also appeared in the government-run newspapers, the most recent on August 26.
(yadda, yadda, yadda....)
"As far as I know Fidel is working, is writing, is publishing articles that I believe are not from a person that is in a state of delicate health," Prieto said.
(but... hello! didn't you say that you didn't have any direct news about his health? how can you be so sure? Aye, aye, aye Abelito!!!)
"Evidently Fidel is very active intellectually and I, although I do not have direct news about how he feels, believe that undoubtedly he is a person that is engaged in intellectual activity and leaving material of great value," Prieto said.
(keep on saying that you do not have news about what he feels, keep on assuring the world that he's engaged in intellectual activity, and keep on looking like a monumental idiot and a mental midget, it's great! Don't stop the circus!!!!)
Speculation on Castro's health has gone through cycles since he handed power over to Raul, the commander of the Cuban armed forces.
(that's not news, AFP, you can do better!)
Rumors intensified when Castro's birthday went by with no photographs or even a visit by his friend the president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, as happened in 2006.
(and whaddahell would you think?)
Cuban officials say that they treat news on Castro's health as a state secret.
(actually, it's just kind of funny, at this point.... Castro is not relevant and this point, he's just a dying mean old man)

CB/KC,
I just saw this. What do you make of this. I gives my heart a great deal of 'optimism' towards the immediate future for Cuba.
What an ass hole, if you are not gonna say anything, and keep contradicting yourself, better you shut the fuck up! can you belive this idiot, of course we all know mum's the word in Cuba
Guarapo:
Thanks for the link, sounds pretty scary uh, the General compared the regime to a startled horse ( caballo desbocado) somebody needs to take the reins of that fucking horse, ASAP
Really interesting Guarapo.... I will take everything with a grain of salt, but it's interesting.
Remember, Del Pino wrote a letter to Raul asking him to change and to return liberty to Cuba.... One thing that is needed in Cuba is the younger generations to take control.
Nice, that old general deserted last year.
I would love to know why is the conditions are such as he mentioned he didn't lead a military revolt.
As I said before, I would take it with a grain of salt, we can never know if this person was planted here for diversionistic purposes. Desinformation is as valid as information for the survival of the system.
Again, a lot of talk, not many proofs.
I would like ask the General to tell us wheter he voted to execute General Ochoa, who was about to lead a revolt against Castro. As far as I remember, and there are videos on the internet showing ALL generals voting YES for the execution of four high ranking military offices. Those executions unchained a string of events which gave raul castro the ABSOLUTE control he has today over the Cuban armed forces.
CB, yes the old 'grain of salt'. I agree. My wonderment comes from the fact that if even 'half' of what he says is true - then, there is a 'high probability' that the whole thing could fall like a string of dominos with only a 'little push'.
That 'little push' is going to come from either one of these three doors:
1. the 'Cuban street'
2. the 'Secret Generals'
3. the old U.S. of A.
My guess is that it will come from behind door #2. - but ONLY after the cASStroHOLE is dead and buried.
I am now more than ever - convinced - the end is VERY NEAR.
LA CHINA (and COLOME) and their families, are plotting their ESCAPE as soon as they BURY the cASStroHOLE.
One other interesting thing Quevedo alluded to (and this jives with what you've been saying) is that the Generals are very afraid of what kind of "protection" they will get if they 'change the situation', fearing that most of them are 'compromised' in some way with the 'evils' of the Revolution.
Quevedo is putting out the word that this "fear" needs to be addressed so that the 'dominos' can begin to fall.
Guess on Door # 2 seems to be correct.
But I don't think they are going to take any step until they actually see Raul boarding a plane. They are not going to risk life and limb while they can keep on enjoying the status quo.
They could have done it the other day when he went to Italy.... so, it leaves me with a few questions:
1- Why didn't they took the oportunity and simply banned raul from returning?
2- Was that trip for real?
3- Was it a double the one who went to Italy?
Exactly. Quevedo was trying to buy a wholesale wall to wall pardon for all the crimes of those Generals, crimes commited both in Cuba and abroad.
That's like asking the Cuban people to forget all the crimes of the robolution, because if fidel and raul were the criminals, most of those generals were the real executioners of policies and crimes that cost many thousand lives. They have been directly involved in repression, deaths, executions, in sending "problem kids" to Angola, and so on and so forth. They have a lot to lose, and they want to keep their lot, ad tat somebody else puts the dead-body while they enjoy the blood money they obtained in these 48 years..... will the Cuban people accept that and suddenly regard their tormentors as the liberators they are not? I certainly hope not!
I would tend to agree with Guarapo. I saw that entire program, and I saw the first time he appeared on that show shortly after the July 31 announcement last year. Back then General Quevedo issued a statement to the Cuban military that it was time to put an end to things and restore the power to the people. Obviously, his appeal fell on deaf ears. You can read about it here:
http://www.directorio.org/pressreleases/note.php?note_id=1143
That said, if you follow Quevedo's history, you find out he was originally with Batista's army, and surrendered to KaSStro when he and his men were surrounded and he made the choice to not fight and switch sides. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_La_Plata
He was granted political asylum in the U.S. in 2003, but I've heard he was living in Europe for a few years after leaving Cuba.
I suspect the General is simply an opportunist, that has always taken the winning side. While this doesn't speak well of his character, I feel it is a good indication to us at least, that what he is currently saying is true. He simply wants to be on the winning side. He's a rat that jumped off of a sinking ship, and he's squealing his guts out.
CB also has a very valid point about the blood covenant among the ruling Generals. I understand the issue of the assholes with blood on their hands, but surely it might be necessary to deal with one of these generals should they pull a coup.
General Ochoa had blood on his hands, but if he would have succeeded in pulling a coup back in 1989, I'm sure the U.S. would have wanted to negotiate with him. What do you think CB?
CB, from all I see/hear, I get the sense that the 'internals' of the Cuban tyranny is not entirely all monolithic at the foundations.
My feeling is that Fidel was the ONLY ONE with the ability/power to 'fuel' this reality OR perception of 'monolithicness' within the regime.
Even Raul knows this (hence, the thinking that he may not stay around long after to hear the fat lady sing).
The rhetorical of questioning why Gen. Qevedo did not 'start a revolt' that he now alludes to, is a good one. However, I keep coming back to this "push" that he says is all that is needed to begin the dominos to fall (I presume no 'push' ever materialized while he was there).
So the question then becomes, who-when-or what will be the catalyst to critalyze this "push"?
-"He's a rat that jumped off..."
Roland, no doubt he knows this. I don't hold these people in very high regard. After all, they were the ones screaming at the top of their lungs "GUSANOS" when my parents and I left.
I don't listen to these "deserters" (which is what they are - since they charted their own course for their 'cause' for so many years, and now want to get out). They are not "heroes" - the HEROES are the ones standing up to tyranny RIGHT THERE in front of their own noses (GORKI, BISCET, MARTA).
What I do though, is gleam the information and nuance from them to sense the 'reality'. Much like not analyzing the light directly, but seeing where the reflection is bouncing, and how bright.
Yes, the USA would have negotiated with whomever headed a successful coup, as it has been done in the past everywhere else in the world.
Ochoa was part of that covenenant of blood too, and he would have been a necessary evil to whom to deal with, too.
As I say, we cannot take the word of General Quevedo at face value. We will never know where his loyalties are, specially in the case of a man who has turned coats a couple of times.
Has he been planted here?
Maybe there are fissures in the high cupola of power in Cuba, but believe me, they are not that apparent. The men up there are the SCUM OF THE EARTH, and I simply don't thing that the future of the Cuban people should be left in their hands for a second.
It also interesting how these men are dreaming of getting their hands on the pie, but that not a single one of them mentions the inclusion of the internal dissidency. Any Cuban from within the island would faint (and contemporary Cubans don't tend to faint that much) at the though of one of those generals becoming the new leader.
If one of them succeed, that would be an "faux liberator".
Let;s not forget the close ties of many of those generals with people like Chavez and even Manuel Noriega.
The sole thought that one of them could be the next leader of Cuba should be reason enough for us to redouble the fight against the system.
In a pack of hyenas there are none without blood on their fangs. And the world ( not necessarily the USA because I doubt the USA will play ANY role in the liberation of Cuba) will have to deal with “someone” they feel has the least amount of blood in their resume.
Ochoa, was such a man .. Ochoa’s blood was primarily spilled on foreign land , he HAD the cojones to stand up to THE BEAST , he refused to sacrifice his men on the mere whim of El Sumo Hijo de Puta calling the shots from his EZ-Chair while watching CNN.
THAT is why Ochoa had to go.
One thing we have now that we never had before is that there are a few (very few, but a few non-the-less) top ranking officials that have avoided direct and traceable connections to blood spilling. Whose main act of guilt was the blind defense of the blood that had been spoiled before and the ever insane idolatry towards KaSStro. But these men/ women can divest themselves of that stigma in a second. Hey all they have to say is “what was *I* supposed to do?
The blood covenant has spared only a few and it did because there was not much more blood to spill! Perhaps La China will see to it, that NO-ONE escapes without a couple of heads under their “list of achievements” but for what we see La China is furiously erasing the barbarism of that list. Probably in the hopes that when retirement day comes whoever is in charge (who WILL be a current member of the Junta with a little less baggage than the rest!, so get over it all of you Guayabera clad idiots) he will get a free pass, collect his 200,000 million and go live in Tuscany or as I have heard there is a particular affinity for a very expensive estate in Costa Rica! Hell for all we know Raul will wind up as the next door neighbor of the Eschefans , imagine that shing-ding!
“Dinner with La China Loca special guest Santana, wearing a Che T-shirt)
The process of transition in any dictatorship, unless it is brought down by war , is a gradual easing into democracy . We all saw what happened in Iraq, Was THAT country ready for democracy? NOPE! Did the USA fuck up by THINKING that allowing those people to stick a finger in blue ink would bring immediate freedom, tolerance and peace to the country , YEAP!.
On the other hand look at the progress in China. NOTHING was suddenly given to the people. Everything was highly controlled and gradually the people rid themselves of the Mao jackets and began wearing Armani, still the yoke was around their necks , the only difference is that the yoke now was made of aluminum , weighed a lot less and had a velvet covering. Eventually there will be a FREE election in China and dollars to doughnuts that the winner will be someone with clear ties to the past , why ? Because the people KNOW him and he was part of the change . Of going from knocks on the door at midnight and disappearing , to getting home at midnight and having a lovely ham and cheese nightcap!
That is how it will play in Cuba and the stars are aligning in just THAT configuration.
