Cardboard and wood

Those are the materials of which cracker rifles (word cracker in English, rifle as pronounced in Spanish) are made. Those are the rifles with which the Militias of Territorial Troops practice in Cuba.
Those are the rifles given to civilians to "play war games" and to participate in parades accross Cuba. Only some shiny Militia units will sport "technically altered" real rifles that are unable to be loaded and much less shot in such events.
Carboard and wood are also the materials with which most of the surviving generals who surround raul castro are made of. They have no real military experience, some of them, as the kasstro brothers had their only military experience at the hands of the 2506 in April '61. They might have gone to the Frunze Academy in the Old Soviet Union to study, but it's widely known that some of them were just issued the title after a year or two of total academic failure.
Then, you would ask, what's with all the military brass that fought in Africa?
Well, many of them are either in jail, or retirement or dead. Some of them are still in service, but they are a bunch of drunken bastards who are hated by the troops.
Then you have that rumor so commonly repeated that Cuban children are experts in assembling and disassembling AK-47. Let's dispell that. Cuban children and the majority of the civilian population in Cuba don't get close to guns ever. The only children (teens) who are access to guns are the students of the Camilitos, a pre-cadet military institute in Cuba. The rest of the students do marches, goosestepping, cadences, obstacle courses, etc, but never any gun related training or work.
Only when you're a conscript, or you are in college is when you're given mandatory gun's training. And then you handle not only AK-47s, but American and NATO equipment as well. Plus the mean Russian and Chinese weaponry.
At this point, what we have in Cuba is a restless mass of conscripts under the command of prestige-less drunken high officials, with a middle level brass full of malcontent young men, who have touch their promotion ceiling already.
Reasons not to be promoted are, in this order:
1- you are not white.
2- you are not the son of someone from the old guard loyal to raul.
3- you are young, so you didn't prove your loyalty in the blackmarket in Angola.
4- you have no blood in your hands.
5- you have relatives abroad.
Ideally, the Cuban Army will not massacre the population.
Just ideally. No one knows what can really happen and the Cuban Army could find itself in a position of confrontation with the better equiped and trained Special Troops from the MININT. It's common believe that the Army will take the side of the people, but I am not so sure. The middle level officers are likely to be slaughtered by troops and officers loyal to raul in order to terrorize the conscripts and to eliminate the leadership of a possible in-house revolt.
Remember Stalin and the Katyn Forest massacre?
Do not forget for a second who is raul castro's idol: Uncle Joe Stalin.
