A conversation
I was surprised, and mad. Y'all can imagine my answer.
He looked at me in the eye, and slowly said, "It won't be any different I guess when he dies"
I went into a long explaination on how things would be very different, if castro were to exist no more.
It happened that I was young and naive.
To all effects, castro is no more. And the difference we have, the only one, is that the world is accepting the communist monarchy as legal tender. The sun-baked unknown, even though he was ignorant about castro, was right.
Then we have that el Mico Putumayo inherits castro's cloak and dagger, and that the press, specially the American press, is quick in the applause and praise. They are even calling him the new castro, and believe me, they don't sound sad, or alarmed, or scared, they sound happy about it. A rogue can go a long way in this world as long as he assaults and insult this country and its leaders. After all, castro made an art of it, insulting everyone from Eisenhower to Bush II, and gaining an icon status for it.
So, the press today will say that the "re-election" of el Mico is a defeat for Bush. I didn't know that Bush was running for office in Venezuela, honestly. What I know is that the dead rose from the graves and voted in Venezuela, twice if it was possible, that the Army jeeped el Mico supporters from one point to the next to cast their ballots in -multiple times, and that many ballot boxes were "confiscated". I also know that the USA have been calling Venezuela a democracy lately, and that the American observers were eager to certify the "win" and get out of there, just in case. Interesting to see how the anti-American and anti-Bush rhethoric(s) took chavez such a long way on such a very smooth ride.
The rhethoric of the press is presenting el Mico Putumayo as the new Bolivar, and the new (f)idel. I hope they know what this means, and that by proxy they are technically accomplices of his future crimes. As per many Venezuelas, who have been deriding the Cubans lately "for allowing castro to be a dictator" and saying "this is not Cuba", well, I have to say.... at least we had guerrillas against him, an invasion against him, and a valiant opposition going to jail for fighting him with teeth and nails. (c)astro never allowed a multi-party, multi-candidate election. Food for thought, folks.
