The power of the spoken word

I got this in my latest batch of e-mails that I usually review at the end of my work day....
A friend who reads EVERYTHING that's to be read on the internet, titled a message in such a way that I had to open it first.
"insult and injury, thrown the other way, brim and fire"
What did I find in his e-mail?
A Spanish language article apparently from Unvision, talking about the change of mind of the David Edwards, the artist who created the -already famous- head of kasstro.
As the Invisible Rider reported this morning, and then updated during the afternoon, the artist was the guest of a Spanish language radio station in Miami. The show-hosts and the public educated him about the real fidel kasstro and he took a new approach about his sculpture:
He won't install the statue in New York City.
He instead will take the head of kasstro to Miami to be destroyed -burnt he said- and buried. It's not clear to me how do you manage to burn a sculpture but some method surely exists, I don't think the sculpture is made out of stone or metal, even clay can be burnt, so let's see.
So, on November 8th, the statue will be destroyed in Miami. or so it's said. Ver para creer, but one needs to have some optimism in life, and well, some faith in human betterment, too.
Now, it's not clear how the "leaders" of Harlem will react. As far as I could find, their "outrage" could ignite some protests, too, but they haven't given a penny to the artist, so they have no control on the acts of this person.
Be prepared to hear the claims of "racism" because the artist is white. But where are the "leaders" of Harlem when the blacks that are tortured, murdered, jailed, burnt, humiliated, and raped in the kasstro gulag need them?
Nowhere to be seen.
Another group that was not heard today was the group that include the Cuban celebrities. Another group who kept their traps shut as well was the one of the Cuban American politicians. Not a single word came from that direction.
So, the regular Cuban Americans who REALLY suffered and suffer fidel kasstro were the ones who educated David Edwards.
Thanks to all who have kept us informed, and specially to all those anonymous Cuban Americans who took time today to expose the truth to David Edwards. Good job.

(my note, the same artist created a bust of Hillary Clinton topless. I think the bust looks better, much better than the graceless original! another one of his works is the first turd of baby Suri, of TomKat lineage, it was an ironic comment on our celebrity obsessed society, and on our servile press)

Sounds like great PR to me!

A couple of calls to some Harlem churches turned out that no one knew what in hell I was talking about, so these "leaders" (as we mentioned to Mayor Bloomberg) were but a couple of ñangaras taking advantage of the naiveté of a few Harlem residents. In fact, a call to the parks commission didn’t reveal any plans for such a statue since central park is just not your fucking corner bar. Apparently anything erected in Central Park goes through some HEAVY approval process. So this "sculptor” got his exposure and name in the headlines by pulling a fast one.

This prick probably had this in mind all along and now he not only GETS his publicity but becomes a hero to Cubans. Fuck HIM and his fucking statue and when I see this piece of shit in little chunks I will believe he is done with this charade.

Andy Warhol had it right al along man! “It ain’t about ART it is about exposure”

Thanks Henry, the timeline is very clear now....
As KillCastro says, Warhol said that "art is exposure" so whoever grab the attention is the "artiste"
Be aware that soon we will see pieces of that piece of crap being sold as gold on Ebay!
I check on the process of needed permits for this thing(and believe me I know everything about permits for everything in this City) and found that nothing is on files. Then I called a few people to get the inside view on the loopholes, and yes, there are a way to display whatever you want for three hours, it comes from the soapbox oratory of the beginings of the New Republic. That, with a bit of a misguided interpretation of the First Ammendment, and they were in business.
The art community actually doesn't give a damn about this. They don't even consider David Edwards a sculptor of any importance (because he is figurative, and that is considered well, reactionary, in the world of art)
On the other hand, the offices of the Mayor didn't answer our letters, but obviously somebody took a look at a few letter written by kooky Cubans (or cocky?)
But ultimately, the people who made the calls to the show in Miami, and the guys from the radio station brought the whole thing down to the ground. I hope that the statue is effectively destroyed, and that the "artistic happening" serves to communicate who is the real fidel castro to the many people who STILL ignores (or choses to ignore) who he is. Thanks Henry for the link to the article!

Very "Cool" story, but SORRY this PRICK had NO PERMIT to display ANYTHING for more than a few hours (as CB says, an archaic loophole) The city of NYC NEVER gave permission for a permanent display and, In fact there is NO RECORD of a petition and this kind of petition takes YEARS to be approved!

Do we not think that Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, JFK (?), RFK and the list goes on would’ve gotten a statue in Central park already? I mean, if appeal to the Harlem community was the ONLY criteria

Whoever called the radio station stating the mayor's office had approved it for PERMANENT display was just part of the charade!

Ask these guys from the radio station that with along the statue this dick head brings the official city approval with him!

A permit for that would take a long time... For example, the Gates, installed by the Bulgarian-French Artist Christo took a long time to be approved, and it was a temporary work of art in Central Park as a whole.... Then you go to Rockefeller center, and they have a temporary sculpture, the Sky Mirror by Anish Kapoor. Again TEMPORARY. In both cases the artists and their supporters HAD to UNPOCKET a large CHUNK OF CHANGE, alongside the grueling permitting process, remember, we live in a system where all of that is subject to public scrutiny and a few people opposing anything installed in the public realm CAN EFFECTIVELY scuttle it.

Perhaps we can instead burn kaSStro? To the strains of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." "Down, down, down, in a burning ring of fire..." Place the bust over the little pile of ashes, just for a few hours, let anyone who wishes deposit an "organic offering" on it.
