playin' 'possum

That's what kasstro's been doing till now.
Plain ol' game, in his very ol' tired style....
But the press never learns, and people react exactly like he wants.
So, at this point, raul and his henchmen have a hit list. And believe me you, they are going to go down that list to bring their prey to the bedside of the ailing dictator as the hound dogs bring the prey to their master.
In the meantime, the world has been entertained with a pathetic show, bombarded with altered photographs, and mainly, distracted from what the real deal is.
The real deal: how to maintain the status quo even when kasstro gone.
The status quo is ideal for the tyranny, if things keep going this well for them, they are set.
Repression goes uncontested.
No balseros allowed into the U.S.
The "so called embargo" in place. No travels to Cuba. The U.S. becomes the culprit for all ills and maladies which have nothing to do with the States, they are built-in elements of the tyrannical system, where socialized mysery is the main way of controlling and subjugating the population.
So, isolationism becomes the main tool for socialized fear and control and for survival of the tyranny at the same time.
We have been witness to something every press outfit is set on ignoring: a dynastical succession in the dictatorial system imperating in Cuba. After this encounter with the lancet, and his sudden reacquaintance with religion shorty thereafter, the tyrant will slow down.... but he will continue holding the reins by proxy with more power given to his bloodthirsty and brutal brother.
Make no mistake. Things are not the same. They are worse. They will get even worse.
The internal opposition is being infiltrated by agents of the regime.
The exile organizations too.
The fight in Cuba is not organized, but on the bright side, Cubans are fighting one man/woman crusades against the regime, with very little support from abroad. The oposition is becoming more radical and they are reaching with more success than ever the common man on the street.
It's now sounding like the voice of Jagger in Street Fighting Man, from the aptly titled Exile on Main Street, Cubans are living and figthing from what's call "el inxilio" or interior exile.
And Jagger sang:

Ev'rywhere I hear the sound of marching, charging feet, boy
'Cause summer's here and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy
But what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's just no place for a street fighting man
No

Hey! Think the time is right for a palace revolution
'Cause where I live the game to play is compromise solution
Well, then what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's no place for a street fighting man
No

Hey! Said my name is called disturbance
I'll shout and scream, I'll kill the king, I'll rail at all his servants
Well, what can a poor boy do
Except to sing for a rock 'n' roll band
'Cause in sleepy London town
There's no place for a street fighting man
No

Update: Thanks to H. Fontova, who pointed out accurately that Street Fighting Man is part of Beggars Banquet, a title that I also find very appropiate for the situation in Cuba. By the way, both KillCastro and myself remembered the song as part of the Exile on Main Street album. Well, well, well.... You guessed it right! My copy of Exile on Main Street was a huge reel of bootlegged tape monstrousity made in what once was CMQ, at a point the biggest TV and radio studios of the Americas excluding New York City. The technician, a big Rolling Stones and Beatles fan, made that for me, and subsequently I copied it into a bunch of cassettes. Maybe he dropped half of the Beggars Banquet and half of the Let it Bleed into the mix. Some were live takes, some were studio takes. Where are those tapes now? They were inherited by a rocker friend.
The song appears in a lot other albums, including Stripped, which is very well put togheter, stylistically speaking.

I was listening to the tune while I was writing this piece. I am always discovering the appropiateness of most of the songs that you and I grew up listening to, given the gravity of the situation. But we were street fighting young kids, because if you remember, we had to have our illegal albums undercover and underground.
I still think that a Freedom Concert should include the Stones in the bill!

Rocking good posts as always! Between you and Babulu I have an insight into the devestated island so many love and wish/pray/are fighting to be free. I shall do my part as always in spreading the word here Argentina (there are many here with relatives trapped there).

HF is correct actually - we in KUBA had a great disadvantage as far as songs and albums were concerned, for the simple reason that we would get them from whenever they came, and we may be listening to a German version of one album or an Australian compilation or just simply listening to bootlegs that were recorded in some basement in La Habana. I recalled how lovingly even covers would be copied BY HAND THAT is how much this music meant to us.
Street Fighting Man was released as a single in the UK only (in between albums) so our recollection of listening to it in Exile could very well be due to the fact we listened to it on a foreign EP or a Cuban bootleg. BUT, officially the song first appeared IN an album in Beggars Banquet. Regardless the song is just PRIME for "Fighting” and damn the album we are grabbing it as an anthem !

I was born in '54, from Cardenas and Varadero, so we're the same age. Out around the same time as SFM, my favorite, which I would offer in tribute to Kagasstro, would be my favorite Stone's song ' Sympathy for the Devil'! The lyrics fit that entire Kaligula's nest.
