a text message
It felt like if I was a NASA scientist listening to a pulsating message from another solar system, like if I was a non believer and I had received an enlightening message. Or as if I was an atheistic who was visited by a vision of God, or somebody who is greiving the loss of a loved one and receives a conforting message from beyond the world we know.
The text message read, simply: abajo fidel.
And y'all know already where it came from: Cuba.

Somehow the TEXT message thing seems to be catching on in the underground. I had a 4 or 5 day string going with one of the guys there. I would send an email to his phone. (Not more than 4 lines) and he'd message back from the phone. As I was told this is good for about a month. The way they do this is by getting a foreigner to get a cell phone and prepay for usage. Some European guy showed up in Holguin and bought 5 phones and gave them away to an anti-KaSStro group and then just disappeared.
Of course once the expiration time was up, they had to throw the phones away. Apparently text messages were not being included in the "usage” so in that month a LOT of communication took place. Another example of how $500 dollars to KaSStro resulted in thousands and thousands of unmonitored communication with the free world. Usage probably in the thousands of USD$ resulting in a NET LOSS to KaSStro and incalculable anti-KaSStro propaganda!
Actually, to have a message with this from inside Cuba, in the middle of such discouraging times proves many things to me.
First, that there are people risking their lives in Cuba in order to free themselves from the tyranny. Second, that they need our assistance and support.
Third, that if we denied that assistance and support, and ignore their sacrifice, then we have no place in a future free Cuba.
