At the movies : AMERICAN SOLDIERS
Lately I am like a dog who’s been hit way too many times on the snout with a newspaper , I see anything in the media about Iraq and I cringe .”Oh NO another leftist prick propaganda piece” But, my local BlockBuster was all out of anything worth seen with Spanish subtitles (see, my wife’s English is just NOT up to par and I spend half of the flic explaining what “fugeddaabuit” means .. So I prefer just to have the Spanish subtitles and concentrate on the flic.
So I picked up something called “AMERICAN SOLDIERS” (Directed by Sidney J. Furie.)
The movie is a true story of a “routine” patrol day in Iraq in an especially dangerous area . Here comes the propaganda I said to myself but to my surprise the movie was ANYTHING but anti-American. In fact It portraits the American soldier with loving and patriotic sympathy.
The troop ages range from 18 to 24 years old all, full of vim and vigor and as they all mention at one point or another in the movie “Just doing what they gotta do , cause they are soldiers” The movie is broken down into 1 to 2 hours segments and you just can NOT imagine how much can happen in a hell hole like Iraq in 24 hours!
Not one scene can stand out because it is full of inspirational moments , - like a GI throwing himself in the middle of the road to snatch a little girl who was too close to a booby trap ( the booby trap itself was a goat that had been gutted and filled with explosives and left in the middle of the path of the incoming troops.
That particular explosion leaves the patrol in bad shape and totally surrounded by the pricks in the area ( who by the way all seem to drive TOYOTA pick up flat beds – so MY advise to the USA army – BAN those fucking TRUCKS ! – You own one of those you’re up to no good. Give them nice VW bugs , let the strap the goats on the roof!
The Iraqis seemed to be a hell better armed than the Americans and in a moment of utter surprise a group of Iraqi policemen make their appearance and save the day, snatching the yanks out of sure death.
The patrol followed the police chief to the local police station, which seems to have had a fucking BULLSEYE painted on the side since wave after wave of these god damn pick up trucks came by with rocket launchers and a LOT of USA artillery.
One American soldier notices an Iraqi policeman talking very calmly on his cell phone while everyone is having the brand new version of the OK Corral and puts a gun to the nonchalant cell phone dude. His superior then puts a gun to the Yank and tells him to stop pointing the gun at his men – ( they stick by each other them fuckers) so the GI tells the officer to redial the last number the guy had dialed and he’d see the guy was directing the attack from INSIDE the Police headquarters … NICE!
The prick goes on the run and gets hunted down by his superior, who exclaims in total despair “if you can not trust your own people WHO CAN YOU TRUST?! (I guess in Iraq—NO ONE)
The troops needed to continue so they could bring a couple of badly wounded soldiers to a REAL hospital.
On they way to the hospital they spot an American convoy and they felt their asses were saved , only catch the American convoy had to make a “quick stop” to deliver some prisoners to an “interrogation” camp.
The interrogation camp is exactly what you’d think it would be. No minimum security prisoner Martha Stewart garden in here.(Only an asshole would expect THAT!) This is a hell hole ran by the CIA . The soldiers are appalled at the conditions and in typical USA naiveté they express their discontent and surprise “We are not here to do this to these guys.. This is bullshit” and blah blah blah …

One of the prisoners delivered to the CIA guy, who by the way had a VERY strong Cuban accent and Spanish name, is tied to two posts and the mother of all beatings begins. The troops can not accept this and as they are walking out decide to come back and FREE these prisoners , because again , WE ARE NOT HERE TO TORTURE BUT TO FIGHT “ (oh youth how your naiveté can turn into total stupidity )
The Spanish guy gets a gun to his head and he’s order to release the prisoners. The CIA guy is speechless saying – “dis are de worse pricks in Iraq .. if we don’t torture one of dem 20 of YOU will die tomorrow” No go .. The GI wanted to fight this clean and fair, so they take some of the prisoners let them go and take with them those who were badly hurt so they could be CURED at a USA facility! – At this point you wanna slap some sense into these kids but you DO see the high moral and set of cojones that drives them.
On the way to the hospital they are told a helicopter is on its way to pick them up, well the chopper gets blown to bits by a rocket launcher (WHERE THE FUCK do they get these things?, I can NOT buy god damn low cal franks as easy as these pricks do rocket launchers !)
So the Chopper goes down and in a scene of intense hatred the terrorists, beat the almost charcoaled chopper crew while the ground troops observed –NICE GUYS them Iraqis. FUCK THEM ALL TO HELL ! Zarqawi should’ve been deliver in a baggie as chopped meat !
The group continues on foot and they get ambushed into a KILL ZONE – now way out , they start dropping like flies, the soldiers who were wounded had to be dropped. The moment they lay there their bodies were ridden with bullets. One by one the American troop is chopped down but a couple made it out alive and STILL carried the prisoners with them so they could be cured!
As they reach a bend in the road, the soldier who had taken command notices the ubiquitous ORANGE jump suit across a river and the wearer is holding a grenade launcher, the first shot immobilized the Humbie , the second made a MASSIVE bomb explode right behind the Humbie. The prick in the orange suit was one of the guys the Americans had let go. The massive explosion left NOTHING alive, The Iraqui prisoners that were taken to be trwted at the USA hospital wound up like pieces of kibbles and bits. The ensuing battle was fierce and only 3 of the original squadron remain alive .
The soldier who gave the orders to liberate the ARAQUI prisoners has gone into a panic attack, feeling that the CIA was CORRECT – THESE ARE BAD GUYS, you stupid fuck , milk and cookies will not work on them.
At the end of the flic a list of the men who died that day is given along with their ages , the youngest 18 the oldest 24.
I HIGHLY recommend this movie, you will get mad at the misguided sense of humanity but at the same time you will feel proud that the USA has not raised animals like those in Iraq.
Now, one question to those filmmakers in the USA who are in charge of subtitling movies in the USA. How many fucking FRENCH watch movies in the USA???
What is the Spanish to French ratio in the USA , like a zillion to 1? , so why this NEED to ignore subtitles in Spanish in favor of French, German, Korean or even Thai subtitles?
Are you all outta yer fucking minds?
Yes we want everyone in the USA to speak English, but watching some complicated flics does require some help and in fact it IS a WISE marketing decision to boot. Were there NO subtitles I’d be fine with that, but FRENCH? Who in hell makes these decisions , is that some left wing message or does Jerry Lewis does really have a LOTTA pull in Hollywood . (and he just had a heart attack ! )
At any rate, rent this flic! You will cry and your heart will swell with pride and emotion.
