Navel gazing, a tyrant's complex
Man needs myths to feed his nature. But that's one thing, and navel gazing is another one, so kagasstro came with the resource of making the island the virtual belly button of the world, creating a mythology that eventually will feed the bruised ego of a nation, to keep himself in power. For example: the myth of the best medicine and education in the world. The populace believes it. The professionals are indeed very good, good physicians and teachers they are, they are curing and teaching with no resources whatsoever, just with they natural resourcefulness and inventive, their personal compassion and their dedication to two professions that are only comparable to priesthood, for the sacrifices they require from the practitioner. And sure enough, these professional's personal conditions and abilities have nothing to do with the political grip of the tyrant. They are good in spite of the tyrant, not because of him.
The same with the sports, dance, the music, the arts. These athlets and artists are not talented because of the mere existence of the tyrant. Instead, they have developed these talents in spite of the tyranny and repression, in spite of the iron fisted control over their personal lives, in spite of all the threats of retaliation against their families.
Then we have the parents, the caregivers, the peasants and the most humble members of society. They have a spirit that allows them to become human beings in spite of the opression under which they live, that would have converted them into half-machine half-animal creatures. The force that drives them is called faith. It's a multilevel network of faith, faith in God, faith in the fellow human being, faith in the future, and faith in the existence of liberty as an abstract concept that is for them as snow is for an African warrior who roams the savannah.
The dictator has lost his battle, many moons ago. His propaganda machine can take him only so far, now that it failed too, the country is in shambles, destroyed morally, economically, and politically. Cubans only have a history to where look back, and on the base of that history they will have to built their future, whatever it is.
There's only thing about which Cuba is really in the center of the world: the country is under the most despicable tyranny of the 20th Century, which surely doesn't have a future in the 21st Century.
