YOU make the call

I guess that even with the last minute change of Wilma to a position much farther north than anticipated, the hurricane still packed a wallop in La Habana. Even Granma can not hide that this time Mother Nature gave them a nice jab to to the liver. Of course , the report follows with inane commentaries like:

“Engineers and architects are already working to reconstruct the building and single family homes affected in zones in El Vedado and Playa”

They come out NOW? Where have they been for 40+ years? Ah , sure! Silly me they were planting coffee!

But they will have all spic-spac in 3 months TOPS.

Granma goes on to detail the private losses of “home owners” like, electro domestics, furniture, clothing, mattresses etc.

I’d like to know what houses Wilma picked up to flood ! Must’ve been a pretty surgical strike and it only inundated party member’s homes. What Cuban has ANYTHING of value to save!

Of course the most important claim in Granma is ;
En Cuba no hubo pérdidas de vidas humanas por huracán Wilma

(In Cuba there was no loss of human lives because of hurricane Wilma)

Hmmm …??

If you know La Habana and you read that the Lion Statues along Paseo del Prado were covered by water and that all tunnels in La Habana were flooded and that waters reached a level of 3 feet and up in district Plaza (which goes to about 21 blocks south of El Malecon) That Calzada de Zapata which border Colon Cemetery also had water 3 to 4 feet deep.

That Playa district was 5 to 6 feet underwater up to 25th Ave (here there’s a steep southern hill that most likely stopped the water at that point) you just GOTTA WONDER how NO ONE lost their lives..

But then we come to this bit ‘o new from this link, Times of Oman:

In Cuba, four people, including three foreign tourists, died in a bus accident as they evacuated Friday before the storm slammed the island.

So … technically this people DIED before the storm hit as they were being evacuated (there were also 3 foreigners which makes hiding their deaths a trifle difficult)
So I let you guys to make the call. In my opinion Granma is fibbing AGAIN!

The Cuban "media" was "predicting" before the storm that there won't be any human loses. Now we know, they have been busy sweeping corpses under the carpet and claiming that the voodoo wizzards of papa fidel deflected the storm with magic canes and a secret drum beat.

The only reason the floods didn't cover the whole city is that part of the city is built on steep terrain. All the flat areas are still flooded. But we are supposed to believe that there were no human loses (like the almost no casualties in the Angolan war, right?) and that material loss is neglectable. When you have nothing it means that you have nothing to lose either. I hope that many people in Havana tried their rafts to save themselves (using the storm as a testing lab for Cuban UFO's -unidentified floating objects) and that now they are making the necessary adjustments to make them more seaworthy.
