July 24 (AFP) - The European Union voiced deep concern Sunday over Cuba's latest clampdown on dissidents, lamenting a renewed hardening of stance in Havana six months after the EU suspended sanctions against the island state. The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, welcomed news that key opposition figure Marta Beatriz Roque had been released, but condemned the rounding up of more than a dozen dissidents on Friday."The European Commission remains extremely concerned about the current political situation in Cuba," it said in a statement. "Recent events appear to show a clear hardening in the attitude of the government of Cuba.""While the Commission is pleased at news of the release of Martha Beatriz Roque, the arrest of a number of Cuban dissidents on (Friday) nevertheless illustrates the extreme social tension in Cuba at the present time."Roque, a 60-year-old economist, is president of the Assembly for the Promotion of Civil Society, which organized a protest Friday to demand the release of political prisoners from Cuban jails. She was among a group of activists arrested in Havana in what appears to be a new crackdown on the opposition by President Fidel Castro's communist regime.Dissidents said Sunday that Cuban authorities had released nine detained political dissidents over the weekend, including Roque, but continued to hold another 17 activists. The EU slapped diplomatic sanctions on Cuba in 2003 after a crackdown on dissidents which saw 75 of them jailed. But the 25-nation bloc suspended the action in January, amid conciliatory signs from both sides. The suspension was extended by EU foreign ministers in June, but in theory could be ended at any point. The next meeting of EU foreign ministers is scheduled at the start of September.

How nice of the EU to make a statement. What action are they taking in the wake of cagastros recent crackdown? It must be a covert operation, because I have found nothing, nada. With their usual politically correct distaste for truth, they refer to the current situation in Cuba as social tension.
WTF? A friend invites you to meet the new man in her life and it turns out to be someone you know is married. That is social tension. Workers marching for higher wages could be called social tension. Under arrest and facing an unknown fate in kaSStros gulag, where tens-of-thousands have been executed without fair trial because you dare to exercise the right of free speech and assembly? That is murderous oppression.

And you're absolutely right, my friend. kagasstro doesn't give a hoot, a flying horse-pie, or three rotting eggs about what the EU has to say. Those idiots have still to realize that they are dealing with a monster, but they DO NOT want to realize it, they know that the guy is a monster, but they really don't care aobut the Cuban people or anything else. All they care is to be friends with someone who hates the good ol'U.S. of A. And that will continue like that until the day they have to call us to go to the rescue because the Moors are at the gates. In the meantime, kagasstro have them by the balls, and kagasstro is laughing all the way to the (Swiss)bank!

Firstly, congratulations on your new blog! We need all the freedom loving Cuban voices spreading the truth about the abuses and dire conditions in Cuba.

The French and Zapatero's Spaniards have proven their cowardice and appeasement preferences when facing dictators. We can't count on them for anything. The Cuban people will have to get rid of the Castro regime with the help of very few friends other than the USA.

I suspect that the bearded pimp is not the only one lining his pockets. As in Iraq, there is a reason for the decades of obstruction.

I LOVE that...
‘Cause it is the most cowardly and insulting response they could had issue “Social Tension"
How fucking hypocritical, gutless and collaborative can you get?
Why fucking BOTHER?
Why not just say
“Hey Cubans we care as much about your plight as we did for the Kurds, so fuck you all and keep the fuck out of Varadero”
Signed
The European Union.
It is such a charade I don’t even know why it still gets to me.
Why make waves when you can fuck a 13 year old girl for 5.00 Euros. ?
And THAT is the reality of this mockery. Way too many Europeans making way too much money at the expense of Cuban lives.
Boy KaSStro must have such a green toothed laugh over this shit. Cause I am SURE he just despises all of these morons, and in his senile mind, they are just afraid of him!
You know it is just TOO bad the former Soviet Block nations did NOT form their OWN Union. ‘Cause these guys KNOW what Kuba is like and are not about to capitulate to some degenerate’s idea of “dialog”
I just wish the Czech Republic just went a little ballistic and just declared war on KaSStro. Just for shits and giggles. Just complain the Czech Republic Embassy in La Habana is not getting enough water. Make up an excuse, GOD DAMN IT!
AND.. What is EVEN WORSE; the USA has not said SHIT! Or at least the “strong note of protest” has not past my screen yet.

United States Condemns Cuba for Arrests
Urges Havana to release human rights activists

The United States condemns Cuba for the arrest of 12 members from the human rights group Asamblea July 22 and urges Havana to release them, the State Department says.

"There are also credible reports that the homes of dozens of activists were surrounded by government-sponsored mobs, which used threats and intimidation to prevent members of the Asamblea from joining their colleagues in a peaceful demonstration," the State Department said in a July 23 press release.

The Cuban government released Asamblea's president, Martia Beatriz Roque, July 23 along with two other Asamblea members.

Following is the text of the State Department announcement:

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
July 23, 2005

STATEMENT BY ADAM ERELI, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

End the Repression in Cuba

Yesterday, July 22, the Cuban government arrested Rene Gomez Manzano and detained at least a dozen members of the Asamblea para Promover la Sociedad Civil (Asamblea), including Marta Beatriz Roque, the group's president. Their only crime was attempting to exercise their basic human rights and freedoms.

There are also credible reports that the homes of dozens of activists were surrounded by government-sponsored mobs, which used threats and intimidation to prevent members of the Asamblea from joining their colleagues in a peaceful demonstration. Cuban state security officials warned these activists to stay inside and not to leave their homes.

We call on the Cuban government to end this deplorable repression and immediately free all of those arrested. We urge other countries to join us in condemning these acts.
