I read a lengthy interview with Andy Garcia on the Independent via Babalu. It left me wondering... why is this guy taking so much credit? Once upon at time, he was given Babalu print outs, for example, and he hasn't even commented one time or contacted anyone of us for anything. Did he stop by Cuba Nostalgia to offer support (moral or financial)? Is he supporting the independent libraries or the disidents? I tend to think that any of these so called celebrities give three flying shits about whatever is happening in Cuba, but then at the end all of them will rock the world AFTER the fall of cagastro is fait accompli. Besides, I question those photos of cagastro and che that he has on his walls, like he doesn't remember who those assholes are, the blood never dried Andy. I don't have any. And I don't go around and out of my way to take any credit for what I do and much less for what I don't do. Don't get me started. I do not respect anyone for the mere fact of being a celebrity, I respect people for what they dare to do. Where are the Cuban gazillionaires when you need one? Not here. Not there. Not anywhere. Oh, yeah! They are in a club in Palm Beach or the Hamptons or NYC or LA! Hi! You look fanatabulous in that shirt! Your tan is great! Your last party was a success! Look at the exception on our own lovely Cameron Diaz, who told Letterman bluntly that cagasstro is the devil, kudos to her. Gloria and Emilio. Jon Secada. Cristina (she speaks in Mexican and endorsed that terrorist of Cruz Bustamante against Arnold Schwarzenegger in ads aired in California). I still have to hear denounces by our luminaries. I hear them from all of you guys... But not from them. They boast of their connections, they defend whatever freaking cause they love to take on, at a very given time, like hybrid cars, iguanas, the toads or whatever else. They don't consider a fellow Cuban an endangered species or anything close, apparently. Why on freaking Earth don't they go public on what regards to Cuba, as for example Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt do with causes that are dear to them. OK, enough, enough for my rant. Where the hell were they that they didn't mob Clinton to prevent him to send Elian to Cuba or to prevent him from treating balseros like terrorists. Nofuckingwhere. They really don't give a shit. They are busy making money and they don't have time for you and me, in our little blog or much less they don't have time to help the world hear about the plight of a political prisoner in Cuba. Why on Earth aren't the Cuban musicians (Paquito D'Rivera is the only exception, with the greatest percusionist of my generation, Horacio el Negro) who have the pants filled well enough to denounce kagasstro and his murderous brother. No concerts for Cuba's freedom. Nothing. That's why we have this blog. Because we don't have pelos en la lengua, which is Spanish for we don't hold barrels. Why on freaking Earth all the Cubans that work on Spanish TV are so fucking afraid of a Mexican bastard that can tell them how to speak and not to say shit about Cuba? With the power of being the most successful immigrant group we should be doing much better politically speaking. No. They are in parties my friend and they cannot even take the time to boycott Michael Moore for what he has said about Cuban Americans. Give me a fucking break! I would love to know why aren't they more vocal. What's missing? In Andy's case Cuba is being used as a hook, a money making hook, perpetuating shitty stereotypes in mediocre ways. How's that he didn't get cast for "Before night falls"? Modigliani is great, and also the Godfather III, but hey, we need to wait for somebody who cast a Spaniard to represent us. Yeah, a movie about Arturo Sandoval. That was crap boys and gals, pure manure. Where's the movie about a balsero? About a jinetera? About a silenced artist or a political prisoner? Not in any one of our Cuban celebrities resumes. Al Pacino portraited a marielito as a cocaine cowboy. The second fiddle was Steve Bauer, a Cuban. Marisa Tomei, she was a Cuban babe in La Familia Perez. Why not a real Cuban babe? Why not a movie about what Mariel was for real? And we also have now that the Fanjuls are collaborating in a movie by Jodie Foster where they are depicted as Cuban slavedrivers. Monica stopped her "job" on Bill when Fanjul called. Too bad he never called when Elian was being used as a bargaining chip. Whatever, I am going to have a drink now. UPDATE: Gloria Estefan and Andy Garcia showed up at Elian's place a few days before he was kidnapped by the Storm troopers of Obergruppenfuhrer Janet Reno (Hat tip to Robert) They most likely were sincere, but showing at Elian's house was a nice publicity stunt. I bet you that Gloria sold more CDs and that Andy's movies rented better on those days, among Cubans at least. Today, Cuban disidents are beaten to a pulp on the streets, that's in video and everywhere, and no single Cuban celebrity is saying a word. Nice, nice, nice....

Cuban celebrities, for the most part, have definitely not carried the torch for freedom in Cuba! Two that I think have, Willie Chirino and Marisela Verena, have probably lost money and mainstream fame because of their commitment to denouncing castro. Because of their sacrifice in not compromising their ideals, I like them even more
I tried posting this at Babalu but got bounced for "Qustionable content" (do NOT know what THAT means! )
So ... here it goes!
-----------------------------------
If the feeling was that I was "bad mouthing" Andy Garcia - I wasn’t. I can give two shits about Andy Garcia! He absolutely has EVERY right in the world to do say and behave as he feels like.
If protesting in front of Elian house was his idea of taking a stand, then good for him.
If this is sufficient for some of you as an Anti-KaSStro statement then GOOD FOR YOU
It is HIS life. The Sandoval flic was a movie and NOT a statement, not any more than Javier Bardem made a statement with "Before the night..." which by the way had Sean Penn in it ( hell oaf an anti-KaSStrist uh ?)
Actually, Bardem DID make VERY strong anti-KaSStro statements after the filming of the movie, and participated alongside Almodovar on Anti-KaSStro demonstrations.
This from TWO Spaniards ...
I remember seeing Chirino and Lizette on PBS educating for 4 hours straight the American public on the Cuban plight. They were presenting 3 amazing documentaries about Cuba before and after The Beast and were as emotional, poignant and patriotic as anything I have ever seen. In fact it was MOVING to see Lizette cry as she spoke about HER Cuba.
Now, stating that *I* want people to fight KaSStro the way *I* see fit, is just ridiculous and you need better reading comprehension skills. Yes I am an extremist, but I do not expect anyone to take that route. The Gloria Estefan "nails" statement I thought it was preposterous and I stand by that sentiment, I thought that Robert Duvall's , STRONG anti-KaSStro stand to the public media was (where he confronted Steven Spielberg and asked him if he would build a monument to the Cuban victims next to his Holocaust monument) UNBELIEVABLY brave , because he followed that with a very prophetic "And I know this is gonna get me blacklisted in Hollywood" Now THAT takes conviction and COJONES!
Another VERY vocal Anti-KaSStro Cuban is Steven Bauer (of Scarface fame). His real name is Rocky Hechevarria and his anti-KaSStro stands have cost him dearly in Hollywood
As far as Desi , Val . Desi Arnaz on one of his last appearances on the Tonight Show came out and ACTUALLY said ."I just want to talk about CUBA”.
Carson was a little taken aback but went “OK”.
I SAW that show and I CRIED watching it. Because here was a man who REALLY had not suffered under The Beast but yet was willing to educate the American people on the suffering of the Cuban people and barbarism of the tyrant. .Yes, he was at the twilight of his career and probably gave two shits about being blacklisted.
Celia, again, sat next to me on the telethon for the Marielitos for 4 hours and was EXTREMELY vocal about his anti-KaSStro sentiments, calling him HIJO DE PUTA on LIVE Spanish TV.
So let's put a perspective on this. There are those who DO and those who DO as little as possible. Garcia and Estefan TO ME fall on the second category.
If you disagree, God bless ya. I don’t want to impose MY particular point of view as to what constitutes patriotism any more than I want you to drive the same car I drive.
You know what guys? This is the worst possible thing you can do to the cause. To publicly denounce one of your own.
And then we complain when people call us reactionary.
KillCastro, I dont know why that comment would have been bounced. I will check into it.
I agree with Jose, Cuban celebrities should do more. Do be fair, I have heard Andy Garcia speak against castro publicly. Could he do more? Yes, he could but he would also risk becoming another celebrity with a cause; you know the ones we all rail against because they are artists and not politicians? What do they know? The left controls Hollywood. Do you think that Garcia should risk his livelihood by being more vocal and maybe never working again? Are we willing to lose our jobs? You want him to make a film about the real cuba. That would be great, but how does he do that? It took him 17 years to get The Lost City made. He’s not a studio, to make and distribute a film requires resources that he does not have as an individual. I agree with your criticism of the Sandoval story, but the truth is the film was made and was widely watched. What other film can you think of that had a romantic lead in conflict with castros regime? There is a special rage against the gulag that it’s victims, including the exiles live with.
We have the same thing in the Jewish community, always we are not doing enough, and this rage gets turned against the self or another member of the community. The beast utilizes this tactic well in Kuba with the dissident groups, fighting among themselves.. So it’s the who’s a better anti-castro exile argument. The hijo de puta just loves watching this. I can just see him. Look what’s going on at the blogs, they’re bashing Andy Garcia. Ha ha ha.
Okay, why don’t we buy a shitload of weapons, get a boat, and invade Cuba. We might not accomplish our goal of ousting the beast and hey, we’ll be dead, but no one will ever accuse us of not doing enough.
I too am disappointed that celebrities don’t do more to inform people about the real cuba. I’m not convinced that having Andy Garcia running around making statements would accomplish anything. The msm press would just ridicule him as another one of those crazy anti castro Miami mafiosos, discredit him, and negate any effectiveness he does have.. As far as those photos, remember you are taking the word of the interviewer on this. Who knows what he does with those photos? I question the reporter who I believe is a British gossip columnist. Has she visited Cuba and frolicked with the beast? I don't know.
Val:
I sent you my "War & Peace" version of my feeling in a private email, cause I dont feel that is for public consumption.
But I REALLY am speechless that you feel that a post regarding how CB feels about Garcia can be the WORSE thing we can ever do!
Why, because it shows dissent? Then why not let it die. Why post in public exactly the thing that you are accusing CB of doing ?
So we have compounded dissent?
“You shouldn’t have expressed a negative opinion about a Cuban in public so I will express a negative opinion about you (a Cuban) on a public forum.
I don’t get the logic.
Last week ago, at Babalu a LOT of us gave Luis Moro another asshole for not adhering to what we thought was a proper way for a Cuban to act in respect to KaSStro
How is that any different?
I though Moro was a prick, I think Garcia is more interested in his personal bank account than he is Cuba. AND THERE ISN’T A FUCKING THING WRONG WITH THAT!
They are both Cuban, and pretty much in the same predicament but why was Moro’s denouncement fine and Garcia’s isn’t?
Yeah granted Moro went to Cuba to film BIG FUCKING ERROR, but we didn’t have any misgivings about PUBLICLY trashing him. So you don’t think that yanks will read all that was said about Moro and Go “Oh there they go again…”
Is the difference that Moro is a nobody and Garcia a known celebrity?
If that is the criteria then I am sorry. In my book BOTH of their basic core is the same. They ARE Cuban.
I only wish we had a Cuban Robert Duval. We don't. And that's what really hurt us.
The more I think about this the more pissed off I get . I just remebered the song by Alejandro Sanz a young Spaniard (Socialist no less) who loves Cuba and has NO problems inserting this line in his song "Labana"
Sobra el dinero pa? un corazón tocao
sobra el dinero si no estás a mi lao
no va a encerrar el corazón
de la gente buena, ni de los poetas,
ni de la gente que se siente libre
cuenta, cuenta, cuenta
un día tras otro lo cuenta
cuenta 1, cuenta 2, cuenta 3
cuenta 4, que te vas, fidel
Now, does ANYONE recall ANY song by Gloria Estefan where she sticks her head out and calls for KaSStro to leave?
He also in a concert in Venezula challenged Chavez with these words
"If three million people wanted me to step down , I WOULD"
It just doesnt take a LOT of verbiage or endless demagogy to make an impact it just takes conviction and cojones.
And THAT is MY frustration with some of our most notable Cuban artists.
